AGM 2017 - Your Committee Needs You!

Our AGM is at 7:30pm on Friday 17th November 2017 at the Mencap Centre, Enborne Gate, Enborne Road, Newbury, RG14 6AT. It is your chance to find out what your committee has been up to and their plans for the future and have your say. It is also your chance to vote for the committee members. This year we have 4 vacancies on the committee - Publicity Officer,Social Secretary and 2 general vacancies. If you are interested in any of these roles you can talk to any member of the committee about them and support will be provided if you take up a post. We really need to fill the 2 main roles. The AGM will be followed by Cheese and Wine as usual.

Social Secretary  - We really need to fill this role to provide a social programme. The number of events has dropped from 6 to one or two a year in recent years. It would be good to have one a month. The Social Secretary co-ordinates the social activities of the group. They can organise events, help others to organise events and 'co opt' members to organise/run events. They will have the support of other committee members. This role could be split amongst a number of people.

Publicity Officer  - The role of the Group Publicity Officer is to:

- enable the Ramblers to grow and flourish by attracting new members and supporters.
- promote your Group and its activities to non-members in and around your Group’s area by, for instance;
    - producing publicity material about your Group and arranging its distribution in suitable local locations ?
    - keeping the local media informed about your Group’s activities through articles or advertisements ?
-organizing publicity stands at local events or in public places
- promote the Ramblers as a whole by distributing national recruitment leaflets sent to you from central office.

Last Coach Walk of 2017

The last of the summer coach walks took place on the 10th September to Marlow. It was also Joan's last coach walk. The weather was kind to us and remained dry and all three groups managed to get safely to Marlow without anyone being eaten. The final coach walk of the year is Itchen Way to Winchester and the Christmas market on 3rd of December. Bookings as usual to Chris.

Colin's Last Gate

On the 11th August in nice weather Colin Honeybone installed his last gate as leader of the gate installation team. This was his and the group's 269th installation. The installations were not only gates, there were also motor bike inhibitors and horse stiles and in the very early days he repaired some stiles. It was also Brain Atkin's last gate, and his total was 53. Afterwards people retired to the Bull PH in Stanford Dingley for a 'cake and ale' celebration. WBC have now reduced the number of gate installations each year so it will be a long time before we get to the next milestone.

25th Anniversary of the Lambourn Valley Way

The group celebrated the 25th Anniversary of the inauguration of the Lambourn Valley Way a bit late on Wednesday 9th August 2017. The actual anniversary was the 11th July. The day was mainly rain but it kept dry for the unveiling of a celebratory bench on the route between Eastbury and East Garston by Dr John Davies the Group's first chairman in front of 30 members and guests with the sun shining in the distance. Afterwards people retired to the Plough Inn at Eastbury for dinner.

HF Holiday 2017

A group of 13 people went on this year's HF holiday to Freshwater Bay, IOW in early July. We had lovely sunny weather except for Tuesday afternoon when it poured with rain. The views were lovely and varied ranging from coastline to downs and forests and the food was excellent. There were three walks each day and I mainly when on the middle walk. On the Sunday it was hot and we walked to Totland and then the coast path to Alum Bay with the different coloured sands past the Needles and over Tenyson Down back to the house. On the Monday we walked the coast path from Ryde to St Helens and then detoured to Bembridge Windmill where we had lunch before rejoining the coast path over Culver Down and finishing in Ryde. On the Tuesday we started near Brightstone  and walked though the pretty village with thatched cottages. As the weather looked ominous we had an early lunch by a church in Shorewell. Which was lucky as it stated raining as we moved off. We arrived at a T junction in Carisbrooke very wet. The coach was 200 yards left and a tea shop 200 yards right, guess which way we went? On the free day I went to Osboure house with 3 other people. This is a brilliant place to spend the whole day walking around the house and grounds and I can definitely recommend a day there. On the Thursday we started near St Catherine's Point and walked to Niton for elevens at a tea shop then to Whitwell for lunch at a pub that let us eat our sandwiches in the garden and then finished at the tea shop in the Ventnor Botanic Garden. On Friday we started in Calbourne and walked down Winkle Street then crossed the downs to the south coast and followed the coast path over Compton Down and back to Freshwater Bay. On Saturday it was time to say farewell to the IOW and catch the ferry back to the main land.

West Berks Ramblers 50th Anniversary

The group started celebrating its 50th Birthday on Thursday 2nd March 2017 with the unveiling of a gate on Shaw-cum-Donnington Footpath 12 by Dr John Davies the Group's first chairman. He also cut the birthday cakes. The cakes and champagne were enjoyed by around 55 members and guests with the carrot cake being the favourite. Afterwards there were short walks. This started the walking "50 miles for 50 years" which finishes at the end of June.

Next up was the 50th Anniversary quiz "50 Questions for 50 Years" on the 10th March. This was enjoyed by over 40 members and guests with some of them giving the quiz master a hard time. There was bottles of wine for the winning team, torches for the second and chocolates for the rest of the teams.

On the 2nd May was the 50th anniversary walk which was based on the first recorded walk of the group. It was a 6.3 mile circular walk across Greenham Common, winding through Newbury and back along the tow path to Thatcham.  At the end of the walk there was cakes to celebrate.

To finish the 50 miles for 50 years there is going to be a 50th anniversary social at the Diamond Tap in Newbury on Thursday 29th June. See the Summer Walks programme for details and a booking form that needs to be returned by the 1st June.

Keep an eye on the website and in the next programme as they maybe further events, but we really need a Social Secretary to co-ordinate the events.

Waterways Festival

We had a publicity display/book sales stand at the Waterways Festival on 24th July. This year the weather was kind to us unlike last year when it poured with rain. We did a good trade in books as we had some East Berkshire Ramblers books for sale as well as our own. Many thanks to all those who help out.

250th Gate

On the 1st July 2016 our Gate Installation team lead by Colin reached a milestone as they installed their 250th installation. The gate was installed at Rushall Farm, Bradfield in reasonable weather though the site was quite muddy. The gate has a special post engraved by Colin to commemorate the event. They were joined by most of our Ramblers Work Party and several guests for photos (see here) before adjourning to The Bull Inn at Stanford Dingley for a celebratory meal and a cake. We wish them well for them next 250 installations.

HF Holiday 2016

A group of 14 people went on this year's HF holiday to Derwentwater in June. Most of us had lovely recently decorated rooms, but unfortunately 5 people ended up in the "chalets" and I had nothing but complaints about the accommodation from them. The weather was lovely and so were the walks. I went on the easy walks two of which had to be changed due to the flood damage last winter. On the Saturday we walked around the low slopes of Skiddaw to Keswick and saw Osperys. On the Sunday we walked around Gowbarrow Fell with lovely views of Ullswater and walked up Aira Force before going to get the ferry when the havens opened up. We finished in a posh hotel in Glenridding. The Monday was the free day and some of us went on a cruise around Windermere. On Tuesday we walked around the lower slopes on Latrigg and then in to Keswick to catch the launch back to the house. The next day was a walk a long the river Derwent from Grange to Rosthwaite via Galleny Waterfalls. The final day was a walk around Buttermere. Everyone enjoyed the holiday and most are going in next years holiday to the Isle of Wight.

Quiz with Fish and Chip Supper

About forty people attended the quiz night on the 4th March and enjoyed a quiz and fish and chip supper. The venue had to change from that advertised as Mencap had doubled booked. So it was held at the Slater Centre which became a bit cold towards the end of the evening. The winning team each received a touch, the second team a box of Roses and the last team a bag of Thornton's chocolates. The was also a raffle arranged by Carol to raise money for next years 25th anniversary celebrations. I will be arranging a quiz next March as part of the celebrations.

New Leaders Required

Your group needs YOU. Have you got a lovely walk you would like to share or ever through about leading a walk or giving something back. We need new leaders to keep up the number of walks, as we are gradually losing leaders and to share the work. We particularly need leaders for short walks (2 to 4 miles) on Sundays and weekdays and for medium walks (5 to 7.5 miles) on Saturdays. If you like to give it a go we can provide help from learning to read a map, someone to prewalk a walk and a leader to assist on the first one or two walks.

West Berkshire Ramblers 50th Anniversary

I am sure you are aware West Berkshire Ramblers celebrate their 50th anniversary in 2017 and the Committee thought the occasion deserved marking in some way.

The committe would like to know how you the members think we should celebrate it? For the 40th anniversary we had a one-day Walkfest on Snelsmore Common with a picnic afterwards. Other ideas could be getting a celebrity to join us for a walk or arranging an event in which the wider community could take part. There will be a special quiz night.

We really want your suggestions about how to mark our half century.

We will be setting up a working group in the next few weeks in order to start planninig for the festivities. So, if you would like to submit an idea, or to help the by joining the working group, please let a member of the Committe know or email the social secretary.

Beddgelert Holiday

A group of us went on a weeks holiday at HF’s country house near Beddgelert at the end of June and had a lovely time apart from being eaten alive by the midges on a couple of days. Most of us found the walking quite hard and challenging, but the view were worth it.

RWP Gates

The 224th gate was installed recently on Boxford Common. It is one of five gates which will replace the stiles on the Common. The RWP will not necessarily be putting in all five but it is very pleasing to know that this will happen in the near future. The 100th gate is on the roadside near to Boxford common.
